SAFED MUSLI:-Chlrophytum borivilianumof liliaceae familyis used in traditional systems of medicine including Ayurveda, Unani and homeopathy. It is a tuberous herb with lanceolate leaves, the plant grows upto a height of 6 inches and it also grows naturally in thick forest. Roots are used as health tonic.
Soil and climate: For quality roots and better yield the crop thrive best in sandy loam soils with high organic content. Warm and humid climate is most suitable for its cultivation.
Land preparation: Thoroughly plough the soil to fine tilth stage, to get better pulverization of the soil 3 or 4 deep ploughing are done in the month of May – June. Apply cow dung 2 t/acre or 800 kg/acre of vermicompost to enrich the soil organic matter.
Inter cropping: Crop which maintain sufficient residual fertility in soil are ideal for intercropping with Safed Musli
Propagation and planting: Generally planting is done by fingers or tubers on the onset of monsoon. Seeds and tissue culture can also be used as planting material. Planting of fingers is done in beds or ridges depending on the slope and drainage of the soil. In 1 acre field about 300 kg fingers or tubers are used for planting at the spacing of 6x6 inches and bed x bed is 18 inches, sprouting occurs after 20-25 days of planting.
