Soil and climate: For quality roots and better yield the crop thrive best in sandy loam soils with high organic content. Warm and humid climate is most suitable for its cultivation.
Land preparation: Thoroughly plough the soil to fine tilth stage, to get better pulverization of the soil 3 or 4 deep ploughing are done in the month of May – June. Apply cow dung 2 t/acre or 800 kg/acre of vermicompost to enrich the soil organic matter.
Inter cropping: Crop which maintain sufficient residual fertility in soil are ideal for intercropping with Safed Musli
Propagation and planting: Generally planting is done by fingers or tubers on the onset of monsoon. Seeds and tissue culture can also be used as planting material. Planting of fingers is done in beds or ridges depending on the slope and drainage of the soil. In 1 acre field about 300 kg fingers or tubers are used for planting at the spacing of 6x6 inches and bed x bed is 18 inches, sprouting occurs after 20-25 days of planting.
Irrigation: It requires constant moisture in the soil throughout its growth period and even after the stage of leaves fall. Water logging should be avoided by providing proper drainage. During dry spell irrigation can be carried out at 2 week interval. Drip irrigation is the most ideal method.
Weed management: Frequent weeding, hoeing and earthing up should be done to keep the weed free from the field till 3 months
Harvesting and post harvesting: The production of crops starts at 6 months after plantation. The matured leaves start yellowing and ultimately dry up and fall. Fleshy roots bunches should be lifted from the soil by digging, harvested roots are cleaned, skin is peeled and spread in the shade for about 4-7 days to dry out its moisture.
Yield: 1500 kg of fresh roots (Approx.) are produced from 1 acre fieldafter which, only 300 kg of dry roots along with the planting material for the next season are obtained.
