Pomegranate (Punica granatum ) is a fruit bearing deciduous shrub in the family Lythraceae. It is native to Iran (Persia) and grown for its fruit, ornamental and medicinal purposes in recent times. The plant grows up to a height of 6-10 meters and has numerous spiny branches and oblong leaves. The seeds are juicy and the number varies from 200-1400 in a single fruit.

USES : Used in Beverages, Food industry, Cosmetics and Pharmaceutics. It prevents cancer, protects Alzheimer’s disease, improves digestion, prevents heart problems, , improves memory, lower blood sugar level, dental problems, stomach disorders etc.

CULTIVATION: It is best suited in well-drained sandy loam to deep loamy or alluvial soils. It prefers dry climate and is also known as drought tolerant crop. Tissue culture techniques are generally followed for large scale production and planted during July- August at a spacing (10x18) ft. Pomegranate plants take 3-4 years to come to bearing.  The fruit should be picked when fully ripe as immature or over mature fruits affects the quality of the fruits. It yields an average of 4400kg/acre.Production increases by 5% every year.
