NEPALI SATAVAR:-Shatavari also known as Satavari, Satavar or Asparagus Racemosus belonging to the family Liliaceae considered the most beneficial Ayurvedic herb for health issues related to women. It has an adventitious root system with tuberous roots tapering at both ends. It promotes overall well-being and good health; it is a special female tonic because it helps women of all age groups to transit through natural phase of life and has a range of health benefits. Thus it is known as “Queen of Herbs”.

VARIETIES OF SHATAVARI: Yellow Nepali Shatavari, White Shatavari 

Part used: Dried Roots (Yellow Nepali Satavar)  

Soil & Climate:
The crop prefers black or sandy loam soil with adequate drainage with pH ranging from 6.0-8.0. Being a shallow rooted crop, it can be grown easily under shallow and rocky soils not deeper than 20-30cm.Optimum temperature required is 20-35 C and annual rainfall 600-1000mm.

Land Preparation:Ploughing of land is done as the soil attains fine tilth and smooth texture after ploughing followed by tillering and levelling. After all this the land should be applied with FYM for better growth and higher tuberous root yield. The field is divided into convenient sized plots and laid out into ridges at 60cm apart. Well developed root suckers are planted on the ridges.

Planting:
The germination of crop starts after 20-30 days.

Propagation:
The crop is propagated by root suckers.

Irrigation:
Irrigation is done before and after planting .Too much irrigation is not required for this crop as it can also survive without irrigation. During summer, irrigation can be given at an interval of 2-3 days followed by weekly interval during winter.

Plant Protection:
No serious pest and disease has been noticed in this crop

CAUTIONS

  • Frequent weeding should be done during its early period of growth. Care should be taken to avoid any damage to growing shoots at the time of weeding.
  • Avoid waterlogged conditions.

The crop being a climber requires support for its proper growth Harvesting of tuberous roots can be done after 18 months when the stem parts above the ground turn pale yellow. Roots are thoroughly washed and peeled in boiling condition and then dried in the shade for   8-10 days, dried roots are packed in airtight bags for storage or transportation purposes after harvested Shatavari in the market is very high in demand nationally and internationally because of its beneficial Ayurvedic herb for health issues related to women
